The CharKev Set

In the Spring of 2023, Stanford hosted a fashion show, Walks of Asia. As a college student and participating designer, I designed and constructed two sets of garments, The Char and The Kev, in the span of two months. This page documents the process from sketch to finished garment.

Welcome to my first fashion show!

In the Spring of 2023, Stanford's Women Alliance Club hosted a fashion show: Walks of Asia. As a college student and participating designer, I designed and constructed two sets of garments, The Char and The Kev, in two months. This page documents the process from sketch to finished garment.

The concept is Hmong Avant-Garde.

I presented the Hmong culture through embellishments and accessories using Hmong necklaces, headdresses, tokens, and sash. These elements are heavily utilized in Hmong clothing and greatly represent the culture.

For the avant-garde aspect, I included flowy sheer skirts and sleeves and designed the headdresses to be as dangly as possible.

Making the Patterns

Making the Patterns

Using the Male Body Block instruction sheet, I used the measurements from my models and created a basic bodice block for each model.

On this panel is the sleeve pattern block.

From Mockups to Garments

From Mockups to Garments

Here, I'm trying to understand how to cut the skirt to make the irregular bottom.

First mockup of the bodice and garter.

Kev is made from cotton to have structure and yet some flexibility.

While Char is made from Vinyl, as my budget didn't allow for leather.

The shape is holding on well to the dress form, so I went ahead and cut the mega circle skirt. The skirt is made from chiffon and is lightweight enough for a flowy effect in the absence of a budget for silk chiffon. The sash base is also pictured in.

Fitting & Alterations

Fitting & Alterations

Model first try-on.

Testing the fit and flow.

Kev's front sash removed to accentuate the flow of the skirt during the catwalk. In place of it will be Hmong beads hanging on the bottom of the garter.

The torso straps were not convenient and did not stay in place, so it's also removed.

Char's sleeves and front accessories are shortened to focus on the skirt.

The torso straps and back sash were eliminated due to insufficient time.

Thanks & Reflection

Thanks & Reflection

Thank you to all my friends who came out to support me and my models for being so patient and amazing!

Reflections:

  • A bigger budget would've been nice.

  • I'm regretful I didn't get to build out Char's sash.
